What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water) is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is the essential solvent for reconstituting lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides before administration.

Unlike regular sterile water, BAC water inhibits bacterial growth, allowing multiple uses from a single vial over an extended period — making it the gold standard for peptide preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does bacteriostatic water inhibit bacterial growth?
The key active ingredient in bacteriostatic water is benzyl alcohol, present at a concentration of 0.9%. Benzyl alcohol is a bacteriostatic agent, meaning it inhibits the reproduction and growth of bacteria rather than killing them outright (which would be bactericidal). It disrupts the cell membranes of bacteria, halting their cellular division and maintaining the sterility of the reconstituted solution for up to 28 days when stored at refrigerated temperatures.
What is the proper reconstitution method for BAC Water?
BAC Water is the standard solvent for reconstituting lyophilized research peptides. Clean the rubber stopper of the peptide vial and the BAC water vial with alcohol wipes. Draw the required volume of bacteriostatic water using a sterile syringe, and slowly inject it along the side of the peptide vial to prevent foaming. Gently swirl the vial until the powder is fully dissolved, and store the reconstituted solution in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.For high-purity research peptides, browse our full peptides category, or check out our BPC-157 Australia for injury recovery research models.
